US CONTAINER cargo import volume went up 5.2 per cent in August year on year to 1.62 million TEU, according to PIERS data, which recorded the biggest year-on-year monthly increase since February.

"Inbound trade in August was supported primarily by a rebound in the US housing market and ongoing robust sales of autos and light vehicles," said Journal of Commerce economist Mario Moreno.

But August imports from Hong Kong fell 11 per cent year on year to 36,754 TEU. Chile had the biggest increase, up 15 per cent to 18,917 TEU. Indonesia cargo totalled 30,915 TEU, up 14 per cent and mainland China volume was up 10 per cent to 793,149 TEU.

August volumes remained unchanged from July. In the first eight months of 2013, imports increased 2.8 per cent year on year and August imports rose nine per cent from January.
