AMERICAN pork, beef and lamb exports greatly increased in April year on year, according to the US Department of Agriculture. 'Pork' also refers to variety meat; as does 'beef' while 'lamb' includes mutton and variety meat, noted American Shipper.

The US exported 230,049 tonnes of pork valued at US$584.1 million, both up 13 per cent year on year, driven by strong demand from Mexico, noted the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).

'Maintaining this pace will be challenging, however, with Mexico announcing retaliatory tariffs on imports of most US pork products effective June 5,' said the USMEF statement.

'The tariff rate on chilled and frozen pork muscle cuts is 10 per cent until July 5, when it is set to increase to 20 per cent,' it said.

US beef exports in April totalled 111,213 tonnes valued at $676.7 million, rising 11 per cent and 23 per cent year on year.

Japan was the leading value and volume importer, with the US exporting 25,650 tonnes to Japan valued at $166.6 million.

In addition, overall US lamb exports in April tallied in at 973 tonnes valued at $1.9 million, soaring 97 per cent and 48 per cent respectively.

Again, Mexico was the leading importer in value and volume, taking in 872 tonnes of lamb valued at $1 million in April.
