US parcels and logistics giant UPS has agreed a settlement in principle with negotiators for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the union that represents the company's ground staff and delivery drivers

US parcels and logistics giant UPS has agreed a settlement in principle with negotiators for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the union that represents the company's ground staff and delivery drivers. The new contract that comes after months of collective bargaining provides hourly wage increases totalling US$4.15 spread out over five years and raises the starting wage for part-time workers to $13 an hour, starting from August 1.

A Teamsters union statement said: 'The National Negotiating Committee has agreed to a settlement in principle on the National Master Agreement (NMA), subject to the resolution of supplemental agreements and approval by UPS local unions. The term of the national agreement is set at five years, expiring on July 31, 2023.'

There is a meeting scheduled with management on July 9-12 to address any supplemental agreements to the NMA that remain unresolved, reported London's Air Cargo News.

Teamsters UPS National Negotiating committee co-chairman Denis Taylor said: 'I am confident that once the membership has reviewed and understood the changes, they will see that this agreement is among the very best ever negotiated for UPS members.'

A statement by UPS said: 'UPS's goal has been to reward the company's employees for their contributions to its success while enabling the business to remain flexible to meet its customers' needs - each of these goals have been met in the new agreement.

'Negotiations continue on a number of supplemental agreements that cover local work rules as well as the separate agreement that covers about 11,000 Teamsters-represented employees in the UPS Freightnetwork.'
