UNITED Parcel Service (UPS) has applied to the Memphis and Shelby County Office of Planning and Development to expand its distribution facility at 3675 New Swinnea Road, near Memphis International Airport

UNITED Parcel Service (UPS) has applied to the Memphis and Shelby County Office of Planning and Development to expand its distribution facility at 3675 New Swinnea Road, near Memphis International Airport. The application for the project was submitted on October 7 and if approved, UPS plans to expand its existing hub building by 266,000 square feet. The work will be headed up by Memphis-based engineering and architectural group, Pickering Firm Inc.

Jason Youngblood, a civil engineer with Pickering Firm, told Memphis Business Journal that construction would begin in 2020. The trailer staging areas, parking spots, and trailer maintenance facility would be constructed before the expansion of the UPS hub building, as it needs to remain in operation, regardless of the rest of the work.

According to the engineer, when the primary building expansion begins, they would likely start from the proposed new end and work their way back toward the existing operation.

That work, on the current hub, could begin in 2022, though Mr Youngblood said it was an 'optimistic' estimate.

The application will be considered by the Memphis and Shelby County Land Use Control Board on Thursday, November 14.
