Wan Hai Lines highlights rising geopolitical uncertainties complicating long-term forecasts in the global container shipping market.

Taiwan-based container shipping company Wan Hai Lines announced that increasing geopolitical uncertainties in the global maritime transportation market are complicating long-term forecasts. The company's Vice President, Randy Chen, stated that predicting the container market beyond three months is becoming increasingly difficult under current conditions, while also reporting that Wan Hai continues its investments in fleet renewal and capacity development despite the uncertainties.

Geopolitical developments, trade policies, and changes in maritime shipping routes are affecting companies' planning for future periods in the international container shipping sector.

Randy Chen, Vice President of Wan Hai Lines, highlighted the growing uncertainty in the container shipping market, expressing that making reliable predictions beyond the three-month period is becoming more challenging.

Chen's statements come at a time when container shipping companies are trying to balance long-term fleet investments with short-term market conditions.

New ship investments continue despite uncertainty.

Wan Hai Lines is not abandoning its strategy of renewing and expanding its fleet despite fluctuations in market conditions.

The company signed a contract in September with China's Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) for the construction of six container ships with a capacity of 11,000 TEU.

The total value of the order, which ranges between 708 million and 744 million dollars, includes ships that are planned to be delivered starting in 2029.

The new ships are designed to operate with alternative fuels such as LNG and methanol, enabling the company to build a fleet that can comply with future environmental regulations.

New construction program approaches 50 ships.

It has been reported that the direct new ship orders initiated by Wan Hai since 2024 have reached approximately 50 ships and over 500,000 TEU in capacity.

The company's new construction program includes container ships of various sizes. Investments, particularly in ships with capacities of 9,200 and 11,000 TEU, aim to renew the fleet with larger and more fuel-flexible vessels.

While closely monitoring short-term market developments, Wan Hai is also continuing its long-term shipbuilding program.

The company's approach indicates that despite uncertainties regarding the container shipping market beyond the three-month period, fleet planning for years to come is ongoing.
