THE Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority says the nation's seaports handled 48

THE Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority says the nation's seaports handled 48.8 million tonnes of cargo in the first four months of the year. That's five million more tonnes of cargo, or a 12 per cent increase, over the January-April period in 2018. The growth in cargo throughput was due to the increase in export transshipments, which during the reporting period grew by 20 per cent compared to the same period last year, whereas imports and transit decreased by 5 per cent and 18.5 per cent respectively.

Grain handling grew by almost one-third or 4.4 million tonnes compared to January-April 2018, to 18 million tonnes. Transshipment of ore rose by more than a quarter to over 10.5 million tonnes.

Container throughput was also up with the transshipment of 47,800 TEU during the four-month period - a growth of 18.6 per cent.
