Ukraine Seizes Another Cargo Ship Allegedly Transporting Grain from Crimea
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that another cargo ship has been seized on the grounds of illegally transporting grain from Crimea following Russia's occupation of the region. Ukraine has previously confiscated numerous vessels under similar allegations, initiated sales processes through court orders, and filed lawsuits resulting in fines against captains.
The latest seizure operation took place recently within the Greater Odessa Port Complex. While the SBU refrained from providing details about the ship, it stated that the vessel was flying the flag of an African country. Ukraine claims that the ship is actually under Russian control. It was noted that the ship had a crew of 16 from Middle Eastern countries.
According to allegations, the ship's name and flag have been changed multiple times, and it was loading steel pipes for export in Odessa at the time of the incident.
The SBU asserts that the ship made numerous trips to Sevastopol Port both during the Russian occupation and prior to the war. According to the agency, the vessel has conducted at least seven voyages for the benefit of Russia, transporting agricultural products. It is claimed that approximately 7,000 tons of grain were transported from Crimea to North Africa in January 2021.
Ukrainian security forces boarded the ship to conduct a search. It was reported that navigation plans, pilot charts, map materials, and radio communication records were seized during the search. The Ukrainian side argues that these documents provide concrete evidence of the ship's entry and exit from the occupied Crimean ports.
