UK calls for tougher international sanctions on Russia's maritime activities, targeting companies aiding the shadow fleet amid ongoing tensions.

The UK calls for increased international sanctions on Russia-linked maritime transportation activities. Healey specifically requested tighter restrictions on companies providing services to the shadow fleet that Russia is reportedly using to circumvent sanctions.

Healey made these statements ahead of meetings with finance ministers from other countries during the International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meetings held in Bangkok, Thailand.

She called for an increase in bans on maritime services.

Healey emphasized the need to maintain economic sanctions against Russia, particularly calling for stricter bans on maritime services that assist the operations of the shadow fleet circumventing sanctions led by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

It was noted that the UK had previously imposed various sanctions on services related to maritime transportation activities that it assessed were being used to finance and support Russia's war in Ukraine.

The UK's call for tightening sanctions comes at a time when the US administration is considering easing some restrictions on shadow fleet tankers.

A US official stated on October 14 that the Donald Trump administration was discussing the possibility of easing restrictions on certain sanctioned vessels used for transporting oil and petroleum products linked to Russia, Iran, and Venezuela due to record-high global tanker freight rates.

The US administration had previously temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian diesel fuel. This decision had drawn criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, European countries, and some Republican US senators.

The UK also announced £17 million in support for Ukraine.

In her statement, Healey also announced that the UK would provide £17 million (approximately $23 million) in funding for the repair of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine.

It was noted that the repair works of the plant, which was damaged in a Russian drone attack last year, would also receive support from the US and France.

Healey also expressed her satisfaction with the IMF's support for the UK's plans to reduce public borrowing and stated that she would continue the fiscal discipline policy in the budget to be announced on October 28.
