Ali Yol, a Turkish sailor, has been detained in Abu Dhabi for two months over an incident involving damaged underwater internet cables.
A Turkish sailor, 3rd Officer Ali Yol, has been imprisoned in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, for approximately two months following an incident on the ship he served.
The incident arose from claims that a piece of metal accidentally fell from the ship and damaged underwater internet cables.
Reports indicate that 24-year-old Ali Yol, who was serving as the third officer on a gas-carrying vessel, and the ship's captain were detained after communication cables on the seabed off the coast of Abu Dhabi were reportedly damaged. Both sailors were arrested and are currently in prison as part of the ongoing investigation. The ship has been held at Mina Zayed Port.
Ali Yol, a graduate of Istanbul Technical University’s Faculty of Maritime, has faced significant challenges during his detention. His family has expressed concern over his health, stating that he suffers from asthma and that the prison conditions have negatively impacted his well-being, resulting in a weight loss of 20-25 kilograms.
The family's lawyers assert that the incident was unintentional and constitutes a technical maritime accident. They are urging for expedited diplomatic efforts for Yol's release or repatriation to Turkey.
It has been reported that the legal process regarding this matter is ongoing in Abu Dhabi, with Turkish authorities closely monitoring the developments.
