ITALY's Trieste Marine Terminal (TMT) handled 105,000 TEU in the first two months of the year, an increase of 33 per cent compared to the same period in 2018, led by growth in containerised rail freight. Intermodal volumes rose by 40 per cent with all the main rail links growing significantly, reported PortSEurope, Varna, Bulgaria.
TMT announced last month the launch of a new train service to Hengersberg in Bavaria, Germany. Just this month the Austrian OBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) also signed two memoranda of understandings (MoU) to boost business with the Italian Northern Adriatic Port of Trieste.
This shows that the port is consistently seeking to develop cargo rail links with central and northern Europe, as it aims to offer shippers ever faster and higher capacity connections. This is one of the port's main methods to raise its share of cargo on the One Belt One Road (Obor) land route that will improve connections between China and Europe.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is paying a state visit to Italy, where Beijing and Rome are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Italian participation in Obor, which could benefit Trieste and other Italian ports.
