THE TraPac container terminal at the US port of Oakland will extend its operating hours to cover the night shift from 6pm to 3am Monday to Thursday, effective from October 15. The thousands of truck drivers who use the port's second largest terminal will still be able to pick up or drop off containerised cargo during the day as normal.
Starting from October 29, TraPac will charge an extended gate fee of US$30 for all import and export truck transactions (not empty containers) which will be payable by the importer or exporter.
Port officials said the objective of the night operations is to speed up cargo flows and reduce truck queues that sometimes build up outside the terminal gates, reported American Shipper.
'A number of our stakeholders have asked for these improvements. Not only will we provide extended hours for the drayage community, we are also determined to provide greater service to the overall supply chain,' said TraPac Oakland vice president Brian Bauer.
By matching the operating hours of the port's largest terminal, SSA Marine's Oakland International Container Terminal (OICT), which started night operations two years ago, TraPac said it is providing the same opportunity for trucking companies and warehouses to enhance their operations.
TraPac and OICT combined handle 80 per cent of all containerised cargo at the port of Oakland.
