New Development in the Tuğberk İmamoğlu Tragedy: A Body Found at Sea
While search efforts continue for the 10 missing crew members of the Tuğberk İmamoğlu, which sank after colliding with the Alsu in the Sea of Marmara, a lifeless male body was discovered approximately 5 kilometers away from the accident site. It will be determined whether the body belongs to one of the missing crew members through examinations at the Forensic Medicine Institution.
A new development has occurred in the shipwreck that took place off the coast of Silivri, Istanbul, on September 2.
During the ongoing search and rescue operations for the missing crew of the Tuğberk İmamoğlu, a lifeless body belonging to a male was found in the sea.
The Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced that the body was located about 5 kilometers away from the area where the two vessels collided.
IDENTITY NOT YET DETERMINED
The lifeless body retrieved from the sea by the Coast Guard teams was brought to Silivri Port.
It was reported that the body, which had been in the water for an extended period, could not be identified in initial examinations. The body has been sent to the Forensic Medicine Institution for the purpose of determining its identity and the exact cause of death.
The prosecutor's office stated that it will be determined through further examinations whether the body belongs to one of the 10 sailors missing from the Tuğberk İmamoğlu.
ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON SEPTEMBER 2
The tragedy occurred in the early hours of September 2 in the Sea of Marmara, approximately 18 nautical miles south of Silivri.
The Turkish-flagged commercial vessels Alsu and Tuğberk İmamoğlu collided around 03:00. Following the collision, the Tuğberk İmamoğlu, which had a crew of 10, sank shortly thereafter.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated in a press release following the accident that the ship sank in approximately 11 minutes. Although a lifeboat and various parts belonging to the ship were found during the search efforts, the crew members had not been reached.
WRECKAGE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED
Following the accident, a large-scale search operation was initiated with the participation of the Coast Guard Command, the General Directorate of Coastal Safety, and the Naval Forces Command.
On the fourth day of the operations, the location of the wreck of the Tuğberk İmamoğlu was identified with the support of sonar systems and remotely operated underwater vehicles from the TCG Akın of the Naval Forces Command. Underwater search and scanning activities around the wreck were subsequently intensified.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
The investigation conducted by the Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the accident is also ongoing.
The prosecutor's office reported that a forensic examination related to the body found at sea is underway and that necessary procedures are being continued to clarify all aspects of the accident.
If it is confirmed that the found individual is one of the missing crew members of the Tuğberk İmamoğlu, it will mark the first time that contact has been made with one of the missing sailors following the tragedy.
