On Sep 3, 2018, the 'Rosa Eugenia' was lying half sunk with the stern submerged in the dock of Puerto La Cruz in the Bay of Pozuelos, being the second vessel of the the Venezuelan shipping company Conferry to sink in less than two months. On Aug 7, the 'Tallink 5' had suffered the same fate in the port of Guanta. A lack of maintenance was thought to have caused the wreck of the 'Rosa Eugenia'. Previously, in 2016, the 'Carmen Ernestina' capsized at the company's terminal in Puerto La Cruz. The accidents left only the 'Virgen del Valle II' operative. The 'Rosa Eugenia' was abandoned for two years. Conferry is currently owned by the Venezuelan State after its expropriation in 2011. The company that provides passenged and cargo services to Margarita y Coche is attached to the Ministry of Transport.
