The tanker 'KAIROS' has been towed to Burgas Bay after operational issues, with costs to be communicated to its Chinese owner.
According to a report by BTA, the operation to tow the tanker named 'KAIROS' from the waters off Ahtopol has been successfully completed. To mitigate risks to maritime traffic, the vessel has been anchored in Burgas Bay.
Captain Jivko Petrov, Director of the Burgas Maritime Administration, stated that the main engine of the 286-meter-long vessel is not operational. Water has entered the engine room due to damage to the hull, making it impossible to bring the ship into port due to its large size.
The 'KAIROS' tanker was abandoned in Bulgarian territorial waters by a Turkish tugboat on December 5, with Bulgarian authorities attributing the incident to adverse weather conditions. Additionally, the ship is listed on the European Union's sanctions list as part of the measures against Russia's war in Ukraine.
After calculating all expenses incurred by the state for the tanker, the amount will be communicated to the Chinese shipowner. Permission for the vessel to be removed from Bulgarian territorial waters will be granted following the payment.
