The 124-Year-Old Yacht Cangarda Revitalized at RMK Marine
Cangarda, one of the rarest Edwardian steam yachts still in existence, has been revitalized through extensive renovation work completed at the RMK Marine shipyard in Istanbul. Acquired by the Rahmi M. Koç Museum in December 2024 and brought to Turkey, this historic yacht is now recognized as a valuable artifact under the 'museum ship' status, commemorating the museum's 30th anniversary.
Originally built for Michigan lumber baron Charles Canfield and named by combining the surnames of Canfield and his wife Gardner, Cangarda is celebrated for its superior craftsmanship, steam propulsion system, and exquisite interior design that reflect the elegance of its era. The yacht's historical significance is underscored by its past as a host to British King Edward VIII, as well as British and Canadian prime ministers.
As part of the restoration efforts at RMK Marine, Cangarda's steam propulsion system, wooden decks, interior paneling, and mahogany embellishments were meticulously renewed. These works preserved the yacht's original character while ensuring compliance with modern safety and conservation standards. Cangarda is now regarded as an exemplary project in the field of classic yacht restoration on an international scale.
Following the renovation, Cangarda is set to participate in special events, exhibitions, and limited visitation programs, thereby enhancing the Rahmi M. Koç Museum's contribution to maritime history. The revival of the yacht highlights both Turkey's expertise in classic ship restoration and its strong commitment to preserving maritime heritage.
In a statement from the project team, it was emphasized that restoring such a rare classic yacht in Turkey represents both sectoral pride and cultural enrichment. The visionary leadership and technical expertise that facilitated the acquisition of Cangarda were also acknowledged with appreciation.
