Meridian Port Services enhances Tema Port with 16 electric cranes, part of a $1.5 billion expansion to increase capacity to 3 million TEU.

Meridian Port Services has received 16 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes at Terminal 3 of Ghana's Port of Tema, reports Accra's state-owned News Ghana.

The equipment arrived aboard the RAM Commander and forms part of a US$1.5 billion expansion programme aimed at lifting the annual handling capacity to three million TEU. The new cranes will increase the terminal's electric RTG fleet from 35 to 51 units once commissioned.

CEO Mohamed Samara stated that the delivery reflects MPS' commitment to continuous improvement, noting that the incoming ship-to-shore cranes will further enhance efficiency and reliability.

The Zhenhua 32 is expected to deliver three additional quay cranes, raising the count from 12 to 15, while 41 electric terminal trucks are due around April 20. MPS projects that throughput will rise from 2.29 million TEU in 2025 to three million TEU annually, with automation planned by 2027.

MPS is a joint venture between Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Africa Global Logistics, and APM Terminals. Mr. Samara emphasized that the expansion underscores shareholder commitment to making Tema a premier maritime gateway for Africa.

The Port of Tema competes with Lome and Abidjan for West African container traffic. The upgrade reinforces Tema's position as the region's leading terminal and a key transit point for landlocked countries to Ghana's north.
