THE Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) was named winner of the 2012 Frost & Sullivan Asia-Pacific "Green Terminal Operator of the Year" Award for exemplary achievements.

PTP's chief executive Azlan Shahrim said it that was a great honour, but also the result of the "employees' collective effort" in reducing environmental and energy footprints through sustainable processes.

"With more than 8,000 vessel calls and handling over 7.5 million TEU last year, and further increases this year, the port's energy demands are considerable," Mr Shahrim said of its goal to reduce diesel fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions.

It also aims to reduce inefficient energy use at the port through recycling and investment of new equipment and implementing new techniques to support its green aims.

PTP was ranked 17th globally in container throughput last year, growing traffic throughput by 15 per cent year on year.

The port is a major global transshipment hub on the Straits of Johor to the north of Singapore. It aims to accommodate 18,000-TEU capacity vessels through the expansion of two new berths and installation of larger cranes.
