MOROCCAN cargo port Tanger Med has posted sustained growth in 2020, thus sustaining its claim as the leading container port in the Mediterranean reports, Rabat's North Africa Post. The overall tonnage processed in 2020 stood at 81 million tons, an increase of 23 per cent compared to 2019. Tanger Med port processed 47 per cent of the total port tonnage of the Kingdom of Morocco.

More than 5.7 million TEU was processed at the port, resulting in a 20 per cent increase. The port also has room for expansion as its capacity was boosted to nine million containers with Tanger Med two last summers.

Liquid bulk traffic grew 26 per cent, with a total traffic of 7.9 million tons of processed hydrocarbons. The Strait of Gibraltar generated traffic of 1.6 million tons alone.

Solid bulk traffic accounted for 303,705 processed tons, an increase of 18 per cent due to the traffic of steel coils, wind turbine blades, and cereals.

Some 357,331 international road transport (TIR) trucks were processed in the agri-food sector, similar to that of 2019 despite the slowdown of several industrial units.

Some 358,175 new vehicles were handled, down 28 per cent. European vehicle sale drops, and the Covid crisis is to blame for the drop.

Passenger traffic totalled 701,599, resulting in being down 75 per cent due to the Covid crisis.
