Cameroon acts against illegal vessels under pressure from the EU and Ukraine, suspending new registrations and removing flagged ships.
Cameroon Takes Action Against 'Secret Fleet' Vessels
Following pressure from the European Union and Ukraine, the Cameroonian government has begun to take measures against illegal and suspicious vessels operating under its flag.
According to Clarksons Research data, the number of vessels flying the Cameroonian flag has increased by 126% in the past 12 months, making the country the third largest flag state in Africa. It is noted that a significant portion of this increase is attributed to the addition of Russia-linked vessels to the fleet. The average age of Cameroonian-flagged vessels has been recorded at 32.7 years.
Cameroonian Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute announced that they are taking new steps to clean up the 'secret fleet' under the national flag. In this context, new registrations of vessels deemed to belong to this fleet have been suspended, and the deletion of vessels currently listed in the registry has begun.
