On July 2 the 'SSL Kolkata' sank in position 21 26N 088 47E, near the Sundarbans and the maritime boarder line between India and Bangladesh. The ship came to rest on the bottom with a list to starboard and partially showing above water, as she sank in shallow waters. A number of containers was floating in the area, endangering the ship traffic in the area. A salvage team was contracted to recover floating containers. Another problem was caused by the 211 tons fuel oil which has to be drained from the wreck.
