SOUTH Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) has announced that its ports handled 164,734 TEU in October bringing to a total of 1,674,891 TEU that went through the facilities in the first 10 months of the year, an increase of 11 per cent over the same period in 2014.

South Carolina Ports Authority box throughput rises 11pc from January-OctoberSOUTH Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) has announced that its ports handled 164,734 TEU in October bringing to a total of 1,674,891 TEU that went through the facilities in the first 10 months of the year, an increase of 11 per cent over the same period in 2014.

Non-containerised cargo tonnage also continued to climb with the port of Charleston handling 96,258 pier tonnes last month, pushing total Charleston breakbulk volume to 334,122 tonnes moved since July.

Georgetown handled 30,773 pier tonnes in October for a total of 149,654 tonnes moved since July. The Inland Port handled 6,128 rail lifts in October.

"SCPA's moderate volume growth is reflective of broad-based strength across a number of market segments," said SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome in an official release.

"As expected, the slowing of our year-over-year volumes reflect the strong comparisons against FY2015 performance and an overall tepid group of emerging market economies."

In a separate development, former Maersk Group executive Clint Eisenhauer is to join the port authority's leadership team as senior vice president of External Affairs. He will oversee SCPA's public and media relations, government affairs, community outreach and education programme.
