TRAFFIC volumes on the trains between the EU and China continue to grow, with 1.46 million TEU shipped by train between the two, indicating a 29 per cent increase compared to 2020, reports Rotterdam's Railfreight. Last year can be deemed successful with an impressive growth rate despite an ongoing pandemic, a stressed supply chain, and significant congestion on the New Silk Road.

However, if you compare this with the growth rate of 2020, the results can be seen differently with 2020 enjoying a growth rate of 56 per cent to 1.1 million TEU shipped between the EU and China. In 2019, rail freight grew 34 per cent to 725,000 TEU.

Though 2021 saw a growth rate of 22 per cent in the number of trains, 2020 was 50 per cent.

The total volume of freight traffic transiting via the broad gauge network of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan amounted to 245,000 TEU in the first 11 months of 2018. This indicates a growth of 58 per cent in comparison to the similar period last year, when this value was 155,000 TEU, according to the United Transport and Logistics Company - Eurasian Rail Alliance (UTLC ERA).

These figures indicate a continuing trend where volumes nearly or more than double each year. In 2015 traffic on this route amounted to 46,000 TEU, while it grew to 104,500 TEU in 2016. In 2017, the total volume was 175,000 TEU.
