Karpowership and Singapore-based Seatrium announced the completion of an eight-year program to convert LNG carriers into floating storage and regasification units. The seventh and last ship of the series, LNGT Türkiye, set sail after Seatrium's naming ceremony at the Admiralty Shipyard. Within the scope of the program that started in 2018, seven LNG carriers named LNGT Africa, LNGT Asia, LNGT Europe, LNGT Antarctica, LNGT Americas, LNGT Oceania and LNGT Turkey were converted to FSRU. These units can store LNG on board, regasify it when needed, and transfer the gas to the shore grid or floating power plants. According to the companies' statement, the transformations are; It involved comprehensive integration of cryogenic systems, gas handling equipment, piping, power and marine systems. The seven FSRUs are planned to be used together with Karpowership's Powership fleet in the LNG-to-power value chain on four continents.
The naming of the last ship of the program as Türkiye was announced as a reference to the origins of the company. LNGT Türkiye was also the last Karpowership project completed here before the Seatrium Admiralty Shipyard is planned to be returned to the authorities by 2028. FSRU conversions offer a flexible option in energy supply security as they can be commissioned in a shorter time than building a new terminal on land. In contrast, long-term commercial success; LNG supply contracts will depend on port and pipeline connections, environmental permits and electricity demand on a country basis.
