COSCO Shipping Lines plans to install scrubbers on ten of its containerships this year, to meet the requirements of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2020 sulphur cap rule

COSCO Shipping Lines plans to install scrubbers on ten of its containerships this year, to meet the requirements of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2020 sulphur cap rule. The exhaust gas cleaning systems are being provided by Valmet, a Finnish company that has four production units and three service centres in China.

The scrubber system designed for the Chinese carrier will include a bespoke open-loop scrubber system for the main engine and generator engines including auxiliary systems and automation, reported Seatrade Maritime News, Colchester, UK.

The scrubbers wash exhaust gas with seawater in the open-loop mode. All emissions are continuously monitored, and the entire exhaust gas scrubber system is controlled with marine automation, called Valmet DNA.

'The scrubber systems can be installed to a single-island container vessel without losing any cargo capacity. The systems are installed before the upcoming International Maritime Organisation sulphur cap and they will enable the use of higher sulphur oil, which is cheaper compared to using lower sulphur oil,' Valmet senior sales manager Wang Shijie was quoted as saying.
