SOUTHERN Africa's railways are suddenly in the global spotlight, drawing billions of dollars in investment as a race to secure copper supplies essential for the energy transition intensifies, reports Bloomberg. From Angola on the west coast to Tanzania on the east, governments and investors are gearing up to restore long-neglected rail lines and construct new ones.

Much of the increased freight demand originates from the central African Copperbelt, shared by Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

'We're at a turning point - it's very historic,' said Southern African Railways Association executive director Babe Botana. 'The rest of the world is developing interest to come and revitalize the railway industry.'
