Sanmar Shipyards signs contract to build BOĞAÇAY XCVII, an 80-ton tugboat for NEMECA, enhancing operational capabilities in Greece.

Turkish tugboat manufacturer Sanmar Shipyards has signed a new construction contract with the Greece-based tug operator NEMECA. Under the agreement, a tugboat named BOĞAÇAY XCVII, with a towing capacity of over 80 tons, will be built.

The contract, announced by Sanmar on October 13, was signed on October 6, 2026, in the city of Piraeus, Greece.

Collaboration between the two companies is expanding.

The new order comes after the delivery of the tugboat GAIA to NEMECA in 2025.

The GAIA, classified as a RAstar 2900SX class escort tug, joined the NEMECA fleet with a towing capacity of 82 tons.

The construction of the new BOĞAÇAY XCVII will continue the collaboration between the two companies.

The BOĞAÇAY XCVII will be built based on the RAmparts 2400SX-MKII design, specially developed for Sanmar by the Canadian ship design company Robert Allan Ltd.

The tugboat will have an overall length of 24.4 meters, a width of 12 meters, a moulded depth of 4.5 meters, and a maximum operational draft of 5.45 meters.

The vessel will be equipped with two CAT 3516E main engines, each producing 2,350 kW of power. The tugboat is designed to have a total main engine power of 4,700 kW, ensuring a towing capacity of over 80 tons and a free sailing speed of 13 knots.

The new tugboat will be ready to comply with future IMO Tier III emission requirements.

The BOĞAÇAY XCVII will be built for use in ship berthing and lifting maneuvers in ports, terminal services, and escort operations.

The tugboat will feature a FiFi 1 class firefighting system. Additionally, living quarters will be provided for a crew of six.

Sanmar Shipyards Commercial Director Rüçhan Çıvgın stated that the strategic collaboration between the two companies has strengthened with NEMECA's new tugboat investment.

Çıvgın expressed that NEMECA's choice of Sanmar again for a new tugboat with a towing capacity of over 80 tons reflects the company's goal of increasing fleet capacity and operational safety.

Highlighting that the BOĞAÇAY class offers high power in compact sizes and the possibility of use in various operations, Çıvgın noted that the new tugboat will serve in port operations in Greece.

NEMECA Maritime General Manager Mario Mizzi stated that they prioritize service quality, operational safety, and modern technology in their fleet investments.

Mizzi indicated that the new tugboat will provide operational flexibility in busy port environments due to its high power and compact design.

Expressing satisfaction with continuing the collaboration with Sanmar, Mizzi announced that they will continue to modernize their fleets.
