Sanmar, a leading Turkish shipbuilder, acquires Boğaziçi Shipyard, enhancing its global presence in the tugboat industry.

Kerim ÜLKER - PATRONLAR DÜNYASI - Sanmar, the company that exports the most in shipbuilding and construction, is acquiring its competitor. Sanmar, one of the world's largest tugboat manufacturers, whose vessels are named by royal families, is incorporating the shares of Boğaziçi Shipyard into its portfolio.

Sanmar is one of the biggest players in Turkish maritime. It is recognized among the most important tugboat manufacturers in the world. The company delivered two tugboats it produced to the Italian operator Rimorchitori Napoletani in a ceremony held in Naples in the middle of last month, and it is growing through acquisitions. Sanmar made its third acquisition in 2021 by incorporating Arkadaş Shipping, and now it is adding one of its most significant competitors to its portfolio. Sanmar is purchasing the shares of Boğaziçi Maritime, which produces tugboats for many countries around the world.

ONE OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE COMPANIES IN WORLD MARITIME

Founded in 1976 in Istanbul by Gökçen Seven and Orhan Gürün, Sanmar's history is filled with productions that have made a mark not only in Turkey but also in the global maritime sector. In 1978, Sanmar operated the tugboats of the state-owned energy company BOTAŞ's oil terminal, and in 1989, it built Turkey's first privately owned tugboat. In 1992, it also initiated the first private port tugboat operations in Turkey. In 1995, Sanmar collaborated with the world-renowned designer Robert Allan, established Tuzla Shipyard in 2011, and moved its headquarters to this region. In 2014, Sanmar delivered the world's first LNG-fueled tugboats, and in 2015, it launched Altınova Shipyard. In 2017, it constructed the world's first remotely controlled commercial vessel, and in 2019, it built the world's first Hydromechanical Hybrid (AVD) Tugboat.

NAMED BY THE QUEEN OF DENMARK

So far, the company has exported over 300 vessels to various countries around the world. The company exports to many countries from Canada to Chile and delivered Denmark's first fully electric tugboat, Svitzer Ingrid, in September. The name of the vessel was given by Queen Mary of Denmark.

    CHAMPION OF EXPORTS

In July of this year, Sanmar Maritime was named first in the Ship, Yacht, and Services Sector at the 2024 Export Champions award ceremony held by the Turkish Exporters Assembly. Sanmar also won the third-place award in the same sector in 2023.

PRODUCING IN AN AREA OF 33 THOUSAND SQUARE METERS

Boğaziçi Maritime, in which Sanmar is the main shareholder, was founded in 1992 by Ali Acarer. Between 1992 and 2005, the company built cargo ships of various capacities, and since 2005, it has started producing tugboats for world-renowned companies. After the passing of founder Ali Acarer in 2017, his son Bilgehan Acarer took over the management of the company. Boğaziçi Shipyard, which belongs to the company, operates in Yalova-Altınova as of 2020. The facility, which has two different shipbuilding areas, operates on a 33 thousand square meter site.
