SOUTH Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries says it has secured a KRW 1.1 billion (US$968 million) order for six mega-containerships that are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2019.
It is believed the ships are the second portion of a newbuilding project from MSC, which is presently causing some confusion in the market, reported TradeWinds of Oslo.
DSME has announced a contract for five of the 11 vessels in the owner's plan. However, MSC has suggested the full set had gone to the bailed out shipbuilder.
Now the Samsung announcement for the six ships appears to support the initial speculation that the two yards would share the business, as TradeWinds first reported this summer.
According to South Korea's news agency, Yonhap, Samsung has now won 24 newbuildings this year worth $6.5 billion.
