Critical maritime safety warning from IMO: Ships are targets in war zones
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) drew attention to the increasing attacks on commercial ships around the Black Sea, Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, and called for the safety of sailors and protection of free navigation.
Security problems experienced at critical transit points of world maritime trade continue to increase the risk on commercial ships. In its assessment, IMO emphasized the dangers faced by seafarers, especially those working in war and conflict zones.
While attacks on commercial ships increased in the Black Sea due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the high risk area in the region was expanded by the Joint War Committee (JWC) of the London marine insurance market. With the new regulation, the entire Black Sea region has been included among the risk areas that are monitored more closely.
The security of commercial ships in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb passage continues to remain on the agenda due to attacks by the Houthis. Due to threats in the region, calls are being made to increase the presence of international naval forces in the region.
Ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has also slowed down significantly due to security concerns. It is reported that some commercial ships in the region are acting more cautiously due to the risk of attack, and the passage of tankers and other commercial ships has decreased.
Seafarers' safety became a priority
IMO emphasizes that the protection of ship personnel is a key priority for the sustainability of maritime transport. Increasing security risks affect not only ship crews, but also global supply chains, energy transportation and freight markets.
Developments in Türkiye are also followed closely. War risk insurance, route planning and operation costs are gaining importance as Turkish-owned ships operate on Black Sea, Mediterranean-connected routes and energy transportation lines.
