THE South Carolina Ports Authority moved 407,135 TEU since the start of its 2019 fiscal year on July 1, a year-on-year increase of 13 per cent through August. A new monthly container throughput record was set in August after handling 206,541 TEU which was 16 per cent higher than the volume handled in August 2017.
'Fall is a traditionally strong season for the port,' said SCPA president Jim Newsome. 'A record-breaking August and the sixth consecutive record-setting month for container volumes, the port is well-positioned for continued growth through 2018.'
In the non-containerised cargo market, Charleston handled 41,125 pier tonnes of breakbulk cargo in August, including 13,153 finished vehicles.
Inland port Greer handled 11,982 rail moves in August. The facility's July-August volume is 10 per cent higher than last year, with 21,780 rail moves over this period.
