A sanctioned Russian cargo ship has delivered a large consignment of military vehicles to Mali, bolstering government forces fighting rebels in the north, reported BBC News. BBC Verify found that the shipment arrived in Bamako after docking in Togo.
Footage broadcast by Malian state TV on 25 July showed a convoy of armoured vehicles arriving in the capital. Reporters indicated that the column had travelled from Lome port, where the Russian vessel Mikhail Britnev docked on 9 July.
Satellite images reviewed by experts indicated that the ship carried trucks, BTR-style armoured personnel carriers, and light infantry vehicles. The vessel had left Russia's Baltiysk port on 18 June and was escorted through the English Channel by a Ropucha-class warship.
Analysts stated that the delivery signals Moscow's deepening support for Mali's junta, which has faced rebel advances led by Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin and Tuareg separatists. Russia has backed the junta since French forces withdrew in 2022, initially through Wagner mercenaries and now via Africa Corps.
The Mikhail Britnev was sanctioned by the US in 2024. Tracking data shows it switched off its transponder after passing through the Channel, reappearing only when preparing to dock in Togo. The vehicles were later transported through Burkina Faso, another Moscow-backed military regime.
Analysts at Janes noted that the vehicles could be used for logistics and combat operations. BBC Verify highlighted that Baltiysk port has been a staging point for other shipments to West Africa, including vessels docking in Guinea earlier this year.
Mali's forces have suffered setbacks, with rebels attacking Anefis and other northern towns. Amnesty International has called for a war crimes probe into the alleged executions of 19 soldiers. Analysts indicated that the delivery shows the Kremlin is digging in to defend its ally, with Africa Corps central to Bamako's fight against militants.
