Russian security services thwarted a terrorist attack on the Arrhenius gas carrier at Ust-Luga, discovering explosives on its hull.
Russian security services prevented a terrorist attack on the Arrhenius gas carrier at the Port of Ust-Luga after divers discovered explosive devices on its hull, reported Saint Petersburg's PortNews.
The Russian Investigative Committee stated that the vessel was inspected upon arrival in the Leningrad Region port from Antwerp, Belgium. Divers found factory-made maritime magnetic mines attached to the underwater hull.
The committee indicated that the mines were manufactured in a NATO country. Officers from the FSB, Ministry of Defense, and National Guard disarmed the devices, thereby preventing damage to the vessel and port facilities.
The Arrhenius was scheduled to load cargo at Ust-Luga before proceeding to Samsun, Turkey. Investigators noted that the ship had arrived several days late, raising questions during the interrogation of the ship's agent.
Initial findings suggest that the mines were not installed in Russian territorial waters. The Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case and is conducting further investigations to identify those responsible.
