The 'Maersk Niteroi' was approached by three perpetrators armed with handguns in a small skiff who came alongside the vessel 16 miles southwast of Guayaquil, Ecuador, in position 02 30 54S, 80 05 06W, on Aug 28, 2018, at 09.35 a.m. At least one perpetrator attempted to board the vessel. The crew spotted the one who attempted to board and raised alarm. Upon hearing the alarm, the perpetrators aborted the attempt and the skiff moved away. The incident was reported to Guayaquil Port Control and Ecuador Coast Guard.
