Extinguishing efforts continue on the Ro-Ro cargo ship Blue Carrier 2, where a fire broke out off the coast of Greece. It was reported that the fire on the ship, which was towed off the coast of Mykonos Island and taken to the southwest of Tinos Island, could not be completely taken under control, and the teams focused on maintaining the balance of the ship.
The fire on Blue Carrier 2 started while sailing north of Mykonos on Friday. All 28 crew members and a truck driver on board were evacuated safely. Following the first intervention attempts, firefighting efforts were supported from the sea. No loss of life or injury was reported in the incident.
After the fire, the ship was towed off the coast of Mykonos to be moved to a more sheltered area from the wind and taken to the area southwest of Tinos. It was stated that at least five tugboats and work ships supported fire extinguishing, waiting and external cooling activities in the region.
Possibility of chemical load makes fire difficult
According to local sources, there were chemicals among the cargo on the ship that may have increased the fire. It was reported that the fire spread especially to the superstructure and bridge section, and the ship began to list slightly to starboard.
While an investigation was launched into the cause of the fire, it was reported that an electrical malfunction in a truck on the vehicle deck was considered among the possible causes in the initial investigations.
The possibility of the ship being an economic loss is being evaluated
According to local publication Cyclades24, it is considered that Blue Carrier 2 may have become completely unusable due to the extent of damage caused by the fire. At this stage, the priority is to maintain the stability of the ship and keep it under safe control.
Built in Japan in 1997, Blue Carrier 2 is approximately 162 meters long. Ro-Ro type ships are used for vehicle and wheeled cargo transportation. It was reported that there were 166 trucks and 29 cars on the ship at the time of the incident.
