    THE Port of Richards Bay in South Africa saw total cargo volumes in June fall 5

    THE Port of Richards Bay in South Africa saw total cargo volumes in June fall 5.7 per cent to 8.3 million tons compared to the 8.8 million tons handled in May, and drop by 1.2 per cent compared to the 8.4 million tons handled in June 2018. Out of the total cargo throughput handled by the port, which mainly focuses on coal export and other dry bulk handling, 8.1 million tons was dry bulk and 211,620 tons was liquid bulk, reported the Zululand Observer.

    Container traffic in June rose to 813 TEU, up from 722 TEU in May.

    In June, 152 vessels with a total tonnage of 5.6 million called at the port, with 149 being for export and three miscellaneous.

    Of the 26 tankers recorded, seven were oil, 15 were chemical and four were liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

    The port currently has seven dry bulk berths. Plans are in the works to boost the berth capacity from 21 million tons to 40.4 million tons by adding two more berths and through the conversion of another from an import berth to export.
