Brushing milk teeth is crucial for children's health. Parents play a vital role in establishing this essential routine early on.
Brushing teeth is a critical habit not only for oral health but also for overall health. The role model behaviors of families are decisive in helping children acquire this routine.
ISTANBUL - Emphasizing that the necessity for dental treatment in children can begin as early as infancy, Demir stated that tooth brushing should be seen as 'not an optional daily activity, but the first step in dental treatments.' He pointed out that the 20 primary teeth, which are typically completed by the age of 2.5 to 3 years, pose a serious risk for cavities and advanced dental infections if not brushed regularly.
Demir expressed that parental behaviors are effective in instilling the habit of tooth brushing in children, noting that children are more willing to engage in activities they do with their parents. He mentioned that when parents present tooth brushing as a fun routine, it contributes to the child's adoption and maintenance of this habit.
Noting that the first primary teeth usually emerge between the 6th and 12th months, Demir stated that tooth brushing should begin during this period. He indicated that a grain of rice-sized amount of toothpaste should be used until the age of 3, and a pea-sized amount should be used between the ages of 3 and 6; he emphasized the importance of brushing teeth twice a day and maintaining this process under parental supervision until around the age of 12.
