HAMAD port in Qatar has reached a milestone after handling three million TEU on August 24

HAMAD port in Qatar has reached a milestone after handling three million TEU on August 24. The US$7.4 billion port has also moved seven million tonnes of general cargo since commencing operations on December 2016. The port celebrated the handling of its first one million TEU in March 2018, well ahead of its expected schedule, reported The Peninsula daily.

The port's rapid growth in cargo volumes has been attributed to the expansion of its route network, which links the gateway to 50 ports regionally and internationally on three continents.

Terminal operator Qterminal achieved the major milestones of handling two million TEU and five million tonnes of general cargo at the end of October 2018. The company was jointly established by Qatar Ports Management Company (Mwani) and Qatar Navigation (Milaha).

QTerminals currently operates phase one of Hamad port which consist of a container terminal (CT-1), a general cargo terminal that handles cars and other vehicles, heavy equipment and livestock, and it has an offshore-supply services terminal to support the oil and gas industry.

The record-breaking journey of Hamad port is expected to continue in future as the port has announced expansion plans. The development works of phase two, which involve the construction of a second container terminal (CT-2), has already started. QTerminals has been awarded the design, development and operation contract for CT-2.
