PSA International Pte Ltd has finished the acquisition of Halterm Container Terminal in the eastern Canadian port of Halifax from Macquarie Infrastructure Partners, after receiving the necessary regulatory approval

PSA International Pte Ltd has finished the acquisition of Halterm Container Terminal in the eastern Canadian port of Halifax from Macquarie Infrastructure Partners, after receiving the necessary regulatory approval. Halterm is equipped with three container berths covering a one-kilometre-long quay with a depth of up to 16 metres, enabling it to accommodate mega containerships.

The terminal is currently undergoing further berth expansion, including the delivery of a fifth super post-panamax quay crane, which will enable Halterm to handle two mega containerships simultaneously in 2020.

'We look forward to working alongside the Halifax Port Authority, customers, staff and the local community, as well as key stakeholders like the International Longshoremen's Association and Canadian National Railway Company (CN) to further enhance Halterm's capabilities and connectivity to serve the needs of shippers in the greater hinterland of Canada and beyond,' said PSA International CEO Tan Chong Meng.

The port of Halifax is Canada's main Atlantic gateway, connecting to 150 countries and generating CAD2 billion (US$1.513 billion) in annual economic benefit from a diverse cargo and cruise business. The port can accommodate large volumes of containerised cargo, roll-on roll-off cargo and project cargo of any size.

The port has exceptional highway connections for Atlantic Canada's high-value exports. Together with Canadian National Railway (CN), it offers double-stack and reefer service coast to coast as well as a continuous line from Halifax to Chicago, Detroit and Indianapolis connecting the US Midwest.
