THE Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is targeting to improve efficiency at the Port of Mombasa to boost cargo handling capacity to 1.6 million containers by the year 2022. KPA's managing director Daniel Manduku said they were working on reducing the turnaround time in cargo handling from 3.5 days in 2014 to two days in the year 2022.

The Port of Mombasa handled one million TEU in 2014 and ever since then the container throughput has continued to increase, reports Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.

Mr Manduku said KPA planned to renovate berth 11 to 14, build a multi-user grain facility and establish a special dedicated team to deal with all Standard Gauge Railway related projects at the port.
