THE South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) has announced that an all-time high of 175,820 TEU moved across its terminals in Mount Pleasant and North Charleston in February, representing an increase of 11.3 per cent year on year.
The combined activity resulted in US$19.3 million in revenue for the SCPA in February, up 11.5 per cent year on year. Operating earnings more than doubled to $6 million.
Since the SCPA's fiscal year began July 1, containerised cargo shipments are up nine per cent to 1.39 million TEU, reported the daily Post and Courier.
CEO Jim Newsome was quoted as saying: "Looking ahead, spring is traditionally a busy season for us, but volumes may be inconsistent due to the implementation of new shipping alliances."
Mr Newsome was referring to the April 1 launch of three major shipping alliances: the 2M Alliance of Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co that are the Port of Charleston's largest carriers, and THE Alliance and Ocean Alliance that groups together six smaller lines.
