Polish Minister of Transport, Construction and Maritime Economy Slawomir Nowak signed the Agreement between the Government of the Polish Republic and the Government of the Republic of Turkey on maritime transport. On behalf of the Republic of Turkey, the agreement was signed by Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Binali Yildirim. Contract negotiations began in May 2012 and was completed in December 2012. Signed agreements aim is to develop cooperation in the field of maritime transport between the Polish Republic and the Republic of Turkey and the establishment of formal legal basis for the development of maritime navigation. The agreement will contribute to the principles of maritime safety and marine environment protection.
It will also allow for the development of cooperation in other areas of the maritime economy, introduce new forms of maritime cooperation with the Republic of Turkey, especially in maritime education, maritime and international organizations. So far, the bilateral relations in the field of maritime transport were governed by the Convention and commercial navigation between the Polish Republic and the Republic of Turkey, signed in Ankara in 1931. With the entry into force of the present Agreement, they will lose the power of the Convention of 1931 in the navigation part, which relates to shipping. This means that the legal and treaty relations between the Polish and Turkey, a new agreement on maritime transport, adapted to EU standards, will replace the previously existing Convention 1931Meeting of Ministers of Polish and Turkey and the signing of the agreement took place in the framework of his official visit to Poland, the Republic of Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
