    Overall, the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) posted 10.4 per cent year on year increase in cargo throughput to 4,418,674 tonnes.

    "While the national and world economy still challenges our efforts, our annual cargo statistics demonstrate that the Port of Philadelphia is on the right track," said PRPA executive director James McDermott. 

    "Our 2012 cargo figures not only represent the third year in a row where we've seen double digit growth, but it also means that since 2009 we've experienced more than 30 per cent increase in tonnage," Mr McDermott said. 

    Steel shipments were up 21 per cent to 197,854 tonnes as was project cargo at 47,457 tonnes. Sugar, a new cargo for the port, weighed in at 24,331 tonnes in 2012. 

    Automobiles, Hyundai and Kia cars from South Korea, were up 10.2 per cent at 192,918 tonnes or 143,258 units. Liquid bulk was up 65.6 per cent at 1,227,095 tonnes year on year.
