Panama Canal Authority raises Neopanamax draft limit and transit slots, reflecting confidence as Gatun Lake water levels stabilize.

The Panama Canal Authority has announced an increase in the maximum authorised draft for Neopanamax locks and an expansion of daily reservation slots, signalling continued operational confidence as water levels in Gatun Lake stabilise.

Effective 15 October 2026, the number of daily transit reservations available for Neopanamax locks will increase from nine to ten, bringing the combined daily transit total across Neopanamax and Panamax locks to 33. The Authority attributes this expansion to current and projected water level conditions at Gatun Lake, reinforcing its commitment to maximising canal throughput as hydrological conditions permit.

In a further development that took immediate effect, the Panama Canal Authority has raised the maximum authorised draft for Neopanamax locks from 14.63 metres (48.0 feet) to approximately 14.94 metres (49 feet). The adjustment reflects a combination of increased rainfall across the canal watershed in recent weeks, the measurable impact of water-saving measures implemented at the locks, and favourable current and projected water levels at Gatun Lake. The revised draft limit will remain in force until further notice.

The Authority has underscored, however, that water resource constraints within the canal watershed persist. The reservation system remains the sole mechanism by which vessels can secure a confirmed transit date, and vessels operating without a reservation continue to face the prospect of indefinite delays. The Panama Canal Authority will maintain close monitoring of hydrological and rainfall conditions across the watershed, with further adjustments to be communicated as circumstances warrant.
