Pakistan plans to acquire a container ship to aid exporters facing rising freight costs and shipping disruptions.
Pakistan is considering purchasing or leasing a container ship to serve exporters in response to rising freight costs and disruptions in maritime transportation.
The Pakistani government has initiated efforts to procure a container ship to facilitate manufacturers' and exporters' access to foreign markets. This issue was discussed at a meeting held by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs on October 1 in Islamabad.
Representatives from Adidas Pakistan, textile manufacturer Style Textile, and the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) attended the meeting. Producers reported that disruptions in maritime transportation have extended delivery times and increased shipping costs.
Route changes are increasing costs.
During the meeting, it was noted that the US-Iran conflict and security issues in the Red Sea have affected the operations of commercial vessels. It was expressed that the distance for transportation has increased as ships are moving away from the Gulf region and using routes around Africa instead of the Red Sea.
Manufacturers and exporters pointed out that while large container ships are concentrated on main routes, smaller ports remain dependent on limited feeder services. This situation has made it difficult for Pakistani exporters to compete against regional rivals that have more direct connections to larger markets.
PNSC's option for purchase or lease.
PNSC announced its readiness to purchase or lease a container ship to meet the needs of exporters. The company emphasized that sufficient cargo volume must be ensured for the operation to be commercially sustainable.
The Ministry, PNSC, and exporters decided to establish a working group to develop maritime transportation connections and enhance access to international markets.
Producers will also assess potential demand for the ship and the amount of cargo that can be transported by consulting with other exporters. The final decision regarding the purchase or lease of the ship has not yet been announced.
