    HONG KONG's Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has announced its fourth quarter 2012 results, seeing a 0.7 per cent year-on-year decline in volumes, while revenues increased 5.6 per cent to US$1.4 billion.

    Fourth quarter capacity was up 5.7 per cent, but the overall load factor was 4.6 per cent lower than the same period in 2011, said the company statement, adding that overall average revenue per TEU increased 6.4 per cent year on year.

    Total volumes in 2012 grew 3.7 per cent year on year to 5.22 million TEU with a 6.7 increase in total revenues to $5.9 trillion compared to 2011. Loadable capacity rose 7.6 per cent, but the overall load factor was 2.8 per cent lower year on year, offset by a 2.9 per cent per TEU revenue increase.

    In the fourth quarter of 2012, the carrier experienced a shrinkage of volumes in both transpacific and transatlantic trades compared to the same period of the previous year. OOCL's volumes of transpacific trade in September-December period were down 6.8 per cent to 295,350 TEU, while volumes of transatlantic trade dropped 7.4 per cent to 93,229 TEU.

    But the carrier's Asia-Europe trade in the fourth quarter of 2012 increased 2.8 per cent to 216,777 TEU compared to the same period of 2011, and the intra-Asia/Australasia trade grew 2.2 per cent to 663,748 TEU.

    Also, full-year liftings of four major trade lanes experienced a growth compared to the previous year. Full-year transpacific volume was up 1.8 per cent to 1.25 million TEU, Asia-Europe volume increased 2.6 per cent to 885,353 TEU, transatlantic volume grew 4.2 per cent to 407,973 TEU and intra-Asia/Australasia volume rose 4.8 per cent to 2.67 million TEU.
