THE US port of Oakland's loaded container volumes in the first nine months of the year rose by 3

THE US port of Oakland's loaded container volumes in the first nine months of the year rose by 3.1 per cent compared to the same period last year, with loaded imports up 3.5 per cent and loaded exports up 2.7 per cent. The port attributed growth 'to continued demand for imports of goods to satisfy the demand from consumers in the strong regional economy of northern California. Export volumes also continue to grow as US shippers find new markets outside of China.'

Loaded container volume in September rose by one per cent year on year to 156,959 TEU. The increase was due to a 2.8 per cent increase in inbound containers to 84,901 TEU. However, the volume of loaded outbound containers dropped by 1.2 per cent to 72,058 TEU in September, reported FreightWaves, New York.

Port of Oakland maritime director John Driscoll was quoted as saying: 'We remain cautious but optimistic that we can maintain this cargo volume performance through the rest of the year.'

The port's total container volume was up only 1.3 per cent year on year in the first nine months of 2019. The port said this is due to fewer empty containers being repositioned from the US back to Asia.

Meanwhile, Centerpoint Properties this month broke ground on a 466,830-square-foot logistics building on 27 acres that is the first phase of a logistics complex called CenterPoint Landing that may eventually stretch over 123 acres. The port said the new facility will boost logistics in the region by reducing truck travel times, distance and cost.
