Oakland installs first maritime visibility sensor on US west coastTHE Port of Oakland has installed a sensor at the Ben E Nutter Terminal (Berth 38), where Taiwan's Evergreen Marine docks, that now provides data so mariners can make informed decisions at times of low visibility.

"It provides good data and consistent results without being dependent on human observation. The equipment is also designed to be operationally reliable even during the harshest weather," said Oakland acting maritime director Jean Banker.

The Port of Oakland is the only port other than Mobile, Alabama, to have such a device, Reuters reports. Visibility sensors are used in aviation and are now being applied to seaports.

Said chief port wharfinger Chris Peterson: "Adding this capability provides information to the San Francisco Bar Pilots, the coast guard and other mariners on the bay for safer and more efficient navigation."
