ABS and HD Korea Shipbuilding team up to explore nuclear propulsion for eco-friendly 16,000 TEU container vessels, enhancing maritime sustainability.
ABS, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, and HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries have signed a joint development project to design a nuclear-powered electric propulsion system for a 16,000 TEU ship, reports Singapore's Splash 247.
The agreement establishes a framework to assess the technical feasibility of nuclear-powered electric propulsion for large container vessels. HD KSOE and HD HSHI will prepare the basic design, electrical specifications, and arrangement plans.
Kwon Byung-hun, head of the electrification centre at HD KSOE, stated that the companies are pursuing nuclear energy as a carbon-free source for eco-friendly ships. He added that research and development efforts would be expanded to strengthen competitiveness in nuclear-linked propulsion.
