Norse Shipyard has completed sea trials for LINK GALAXY after a 25.2-meter extension, enhancing its operational capabilities.
Norse extends LINK GALAXY by 25.2 meters: Sea trials completed in one day
Norse Shipyard in Kocaeli has completed the sea trials for the LINK GALAXY conversion project. A 25.2-meter mid-block was added to the vessel, increasing its total length from 122.2 meters to 147.2 meters; propulsion, maneuvering, and onboard operational systems were comprehensively renewed.
Norse Shipyard announced that it completed the sea trials of the LINK GALAXY vessel in a single day following extensive extension and conversion works. As part of the project, a new 25.2-meter mid-block was added to the hull, bringing the total length to 147.2 meters.
The conversion included the installation of a new superstructure, an onboard vehicle ramp, bow and stern thrusters, a new rudder and propeller, and a CO₂ chamber. Numerous mechanical and technical systems were also updated according to current operational needs.
Initially measuring 122.2 meters, LINK GALAXY was launched using the SPMT and Strand Jack system. After the extension and conversion, it was launched again using the same method at its new length of 147.2 meters. Norse reported that the project is approaching the delivery phase.
The work carried out at the shipyard's facility in the Kocaeli Free Zone in Başiskele is not limited to merely adding blocks to the hull. With the increase in the vessel's length, the evaluation of its sailing behavior, center of gravity, longitudinal strength, maneuvering characteristics, propulsion system, and fire safety calculations also needs to be reassessed.
The completion of the sea trials in one day indicates that the preparatory work and harbor tests have progressed successfully. However, the completion of the sea trials does not mean that the vessel has been simultaneously delivered to the customer or that all class and flag procedures have been completed. The evaluation of test reports, addressing any deficiencies, and the preparation of final documents are separate stages.
The LINK GALAXY project is significant in demonstrating the engineering capacity of Turkish shipyards in complex extension and conversion projects, in addition to new shipbuilding. When it becomes difficult to find a slip for new ship orders, enlarging an existing hull can sometimes be a faster and more economical way to renew the fleet.
