The operation was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron on his social media account. The dramatic footage is set in the Atlantic Ocean.
The tanker named 'Tagor,' which is on the sanctions list belonging to Russia, was detected moving through the ocean. Allied forces led by France and the United Kingdom took action against the vessel. A warning was issued first. Subsequently, a helicopter from the French Navy flew over the ship. The commandos quickly boarded the vessel, and the crew surrendered without resistance.
In a statement from France, it was noted that the ship had departed from Russia's Murmansk Port.
In comments made on social media, President Macron claimed that the ship was attempting to circumvent sanctions and was violating maritime law.
Russia is trying to evade the oil embargo with ships referred to as ghost fleets. It is believed that there are over 1,300 vessels using different flags and registration numbers in this manner.
The Kremlin also provided a statement regarding the incident. It described the seizure of the Russian ship by allied forces led by France and the United Kingdom as 'illegal.'
